Position Overview
Our client, a well-established Madison-based CPA firm, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join their growing team. This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working directly with business clients, and brings a strong blend of technical accounting expertise and leadership capability.
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in managing financial reporting, overseeing month-end close processes, improving internal controls, and supporting multiple client engagements across diverse industries. Candidates with prior public accounting experience are highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in overseeing daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activity
- Manage and review monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management initiatives
- Reconcile complex balance sheet accounts and investigate variances
- Develop, implement, and enhance accounting processes and internal controls
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax teams, and client stakeholders
- Mentor and support junior accounting staff
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership and clients
- Lead or assist with special projects, system implementations, and process improvements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA designation preferred but not required
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior public accounting experience is a significant advantage
- Experience in a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Assistant Controller capacity preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and NetSuite strongly preferred
- Advanced Excel skills and strong comfort with accounting systems
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients and leadership teams
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive
